Bathroom Remodel Costs in San Diego: 2026 Honest Numbers

Most "bathroom remodel cost" pages online give you a national average and call it a day. The actual number for a San Diego bathroom remodel in 2026 depends on scope, fixture selection, plumbing relocation, and tile choice — and the spread is wide. Here are honest 2026 ranges based on our project data.

Tier 1: Surface refresh — $20,000 to $35,000

You're keeping the layout – vanity stays in the same location, bathtub/shower stays in the same location, lighting and electrical all stay in the same location.  So what changes?  Everything comes out and new finishes are installed for a completely fresh look.  This includes new tile (shower/tub surround and bathroom floors), new vanity cabinet, new sink and fixtures, new shower trim, new toilet, new light fixtures, and an updated paint job.

Estimated material budget: $5,000 - $10,000

Estimated labor budget: $15,000 - $25,000

Estimated Timeline: 4–5 weeks

Tier 2: Mid-range remodel — $35,000 to $65,000

Instead of updating all of the finishes in the same exact layout, a mid-range bathroom remodel may typically involve changing the layout.  Plumbing fixtures are usually relocated, which means that showers/baths are moved to another part of the bathroom, vanities and moved, toilets are moved, etc.  This results in relocation of electrical & lighting and may include other bells and whistles such as running dedicated electrical for smart toilets, integrated LED lighting, high end finishes, glass features, and creative storage designs.

Estimated material budget: $10,000 - $25,000

Estimated labor budget: $25,000 - $40,000

Estimated Timeline: 5–7 weeks

Tier 3: High-end / primary suite — $95,000 to $200,000+

Full primary bathroom rebuilds often incorporate a freestanding tub, walk-in glass-enclosed shower with linear drain, custom vanities, integrated lighting, smart fixtures, and complex tile designs utilizing natural stone or large-format tiles throughout. These projects are often the result of a collaboration between a homeowner and an interior designer, and require a specialized team of tradespeople to execute the vision.  Designers source high-end fixtures and finishes from premium retail and specialty stores.

Estimated material budget: $35,000 - $100,000

Estimated labor budget: $60,000 - $100,000

Estimated Timeline: 8–12 weeks

What actually drives the number

  • Plumbing relocation. Moving plumbing (e.g. toilet, sinks, or showers) can add thousands in plumbing labor and patching.  Relocating plumbing on a slab is considerably more labor-intensive (expensive!) than doing so on a raised foundation.

  • Finish material selection. Tile selection can vary from $2 per square foot for basic porcelain to over $40 per square food for large format or natural stone tile.  Bathtubs can be sourced for $300 or $3,000.  Simple builder-grade prefab vanities range from $200 to $600 while custom vanities can easily exceed $20,000. Prior to any labor or installation, the material selection will greatly impact the overall project budget.
