Reform vs. IKEA Cabinets: An Honest Comparison From an Installer Who Installs Both
If you're researching a kitchen remodel and you've found yourself comparing Reform to IKEA, you're not alone. The two get conflated constantly — partly because Reform started as a company that designed custom fronts for IKEA cabinet boxes, and partly because both occupy the "European modular" space in the American market. The short answer
Reform is a fully integrated, premium European kitchen built around Scandinavian design. IKEA is a modular kitchen system at unbeatable value, but depends heavily on the overall design and installer to look high-end. They are not the same product, and the price reflects it.
Cabinet box construction
IKEA SEKTION cabinets use ¾” particleboard boxes with a white melamine finish. They are dimensionally consistent, easy to source, and engineered for self-assembly (they arrive flat-packed). Reform cabinets use their own boxes and are shipped pre-assembled (aside from tall / pantry cabinets). Additionally, Reform’s boxes come in multiple colors and finishes including white laminate, light oak laminate, dark wood laminate, etc.
Fronts and finishes
IKEA stocks roughly 18 - 25 different front styles, from ASKERSUND to VOXTORP, using mostly compressed MDF with thermofoil veneers. Some styles such as LERHYTTAN and VEDHAMN are solid, stained and/or painted wood. Reform offers a curated collection of proprietary European door styles as well as collaborations with renowned designers such as Bjarke Ingels Group, Norm Architects, and Muller Van Severen. These door styles include finishes in real-wood veneer, smoked oak, linoleum, stainless steel, and lacquered finishes that don't exist in the IKEA catalog.

Lead time
This is where IKEA has a significant advantage over Reform. Aside from the global supply chain crisis during COVID, IKEA’s leads the world in supply chain efficiency and brilliance. Speaking from the perspective of an installer in San Diego, most IKEA kitchens can be fully ordered and delivered within the span of 3 - 5 business days (if not sooner). Reform on the hand, has a typical lead time of 12 - 16 weeks since all products are made to order and shipped from their manufacturer in Eastern Europe.
Cost
A typical 10-foot IKEA SEKTION kitchen, fully installed in San Diego with mid-range fronts will land around $14,000–$18,000. A comparable Reform kitchen, installed, typically runs $30,000–$45,000+ depending on fronts, materials, and final cabinet design.
Install complexity
Both systems require precision, but Reform install tolerances are tighter — the panels are heavier, the reveals are unforgiving, and integrated appliance prep has less margin. We work on both, and we charge differently because the labor is different.
Who should choose what
Choose IKEA SEKTION when you want clean European function at a controlled budget and you're working with a skilled installer who can hide its modular origins. Choose Reform when the kitchen needs to read as architecture — when the fronts, the hardware, and the integration are the design statement.
